Deep into whisky season
There’s no theme this time, just a selection of great whisky, chosen to emphasise the range available and the contrast between styles.
If you’re new to whisky, the best way to learn is by trying as many different whiskies as possible. Being able to identify (or at least to confidently claim to) different smells and tastes is something of a muscle that takes time to train. So exposure to whiskies that let you see changes from glass to glass can help build that recognition, because that’s all it is: recognising a connection in your brain between what you’re drinking and some other memory of a similar flavour.
If you’re already familiar with whisky, I hope that my selections are mostly new bottles to you, or offer a chance to continue exploring the wide range of styles, maybe branching out to try something you aren’t so used to. For me, trying new whiskies and seeing how flavours change through a tasting, possibly discovering an unusual new note or noteworthy release, is a lot of fun.
But most of all, I enjoy sharing the experience with the room; giving people a chance to try a line-up of whiskies that they wouldn’t ordinarily find in a bar, or at home. Hosting and attending a tasting, I see as a social event; however you’re enjoying the whisky, you’re sharing that time with the people around you. So, a theme for a line-up is no bad thing, but it certainly isn’t necessary!
