Our first distillery showcase event

The final day of the festival of Diwali is a celebration of the bond between brothers and sisters, which feels like a good background for us coming together for a whisky tasting. Staying on theme, we’ll be tasting whisky from India, and specifically, we will be welcoming a brand ambassador from Paul John Indian whisky. Diwali is the Hindu festival of light (similar to Christmas and Hanukkah in Christianity and Judaism), with community gatherings and food playing a large part. We’ll be present as our community at the tasting, and we’ll be providing some delicious Indian sweets to nibble on, from Banana Leaf, to tick off that food box too.

Following a 2012 launch in England, Paul John reached its home market (the biggest consumers of whisky in the world), India, the following year. They make their whisky using Indian barley, though with some expressions they do also include imported Scottish peat. Goa, where the distillery is located, enjoys a tropical monsoon climate, worlds away from the environment in which Scottish distillers craft their whisky. They’ll have a full range of flavours to present for us, all offering a glimpse into what effects the Goan climate has on the whisky making process.

This is a milestone I’ve been looking forward to: the club’s first event hosted by an external presenter. It’s a fantastic accomplishment that we’ve been hosting events and building up an audience to this point, where producers and the wider industry see us as worthy of their time. Over the next few months, we’ll be hosting a range of different presenters bringing their fantastic spirits and stories to share with us.

What is a guided whisky tasting?

All are welcome to attend the event, whether you consider yourself a whisky expert or haven’t explored it at all. The evening will start with an introduction to the event and the first whisky, explaining a bit about why I’ve chosen it. We’ll share some nosing and tasting notes and then I’ll let you enjoy the whisky with your friends and fellow guests. After a short while this process will repeat for each of the remaining whiskies.

I’ll be happy to try and answer any questions about the whiskies, the process of making them and the industry at any point. These events are a great opportunity to try some whisky you probably can’t try in a bar, without buying a whole bottle!

A bit about your host:

My philosophy with whisky is that there’s no wrong way to enjoy it. Neat, with water, with ice, blended, smokey, sweet, from Scotland or Japan or Mexico! Everyone should be able to enjoy tasting and smelling what they taste and smell however they choose.

I’ve been hosting whisky tastings in Cambridge for 5 years. Initially, as a part of the Cambridge University Whisky Appreciation Society where I held a 2 year presidency. Since then, I have branched out to reach a wider audience in the city and the surrounding area as an independent host. After studying in Scotland and continuing to explore the world of whisky in the years since, from Cambridge, I really enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with others and find that there’s always more whisky to try.
